In the 21st century globalized world following the same teaching approach or method is not suitable or applicable to all the learners, especially when it comes to learning styles. Each learner’s cognitive perception differs as they receive, process and retains information differently. As educators it is our responsibility to understand these unique learning styles which are not only helpful to us but also transformative. By customizing lessons based on their learning style we can generate interest among learners and promote a more captivating classroom experience. Customizing lessons to learning styles of learners can help them in different ways to unlock potential and foster a more engaging classroom experience.

What are learning styles?

A person's approach to comprehending and retaining information is known as their learning style. Typical learning styles include the following:

Visual

learners who like to comprehend connections between things using visual aids like mind maps, charts, and graphs.

Auditory

Learners who would rather hear information, such in debates, talks, or lectures. In order to answer inquiries or make judgments, they could also ponder out loud.

Kinesthetic

learners who would rather learn by doing things with their hands, moving about, or touching things. They might perform well in scientific investigations that involve practical laboratory work.

Writing and reading

students who thrive with text-heavy materials like worksheets and presentations and who prefer to concentrate on written language. They might perform and take notes.

Solitary    

Self-motivated learners who can focus effectively on assignments without a lot of outside stimuli. Quiet study spaces and thorough personal note-taking may be beneficial to them.

As the name implies, visual images are related to the visual learning style. When given knowledge in a visual format, children with this style appear to remember details better. Strong observational abilities for handling real-life situations are also developed via a visual learning method. A visual learning style can also be fostered by studying something hands-on or through activity.

 It can be helpful to visual learners in the following ways:

  • Acquiring knowledge through movies or animation.
  • Charts, diagrams, photos and illustrations throughout the lessons
  • Revisions with flashcards
  • Additional visual indicators like highlighting color coding.

 Auditory learning-How it works?

The foundation of the auditory learning style is spoken words and sounds. This preferred learning approach is used by learners who need vocal direction and teaching. These learners learn better when we give them knowledge orally. It is better to discuss teachings orally as opposed to using visual text or media.

The following are some specific ways that auditory learners can benefit from it:

  • Involvement in group conversations
  • Attending lectures and presentations in class
  • Involvement in class discussions, debates, and impromptu
  • Listening to podcasts
  • Taking in audiobooks
  • Taking in self-recorded educational sessions.
  • Using auditory mnemonics, such as rhymes or melodies to learn

Kinesthetic learning -How it works?

 Learners with kinesthetic learning styles learn best when they are physically involved in assignments and activities. Kinesthetic learners navigate through the physical manipulation of instructional materials combined with visual and aural clues. Therefore, assignments that involve hands-on involvement help learners retain information.

  • Kinesthetic learners can benefit from the following specific ways
  • Engaging in simulations or doing out research
  • Making use of tactile features and clues in the lesson plan
  • Taking part in movement and dance exercises

 Writing and reading -How it works?

Since the essence of this learning technique is obviously apparent, there is no need for further explanation. Written material is the most effective way to teach learners. Students who like to read or write in order to absorb knowledge can benefit from the following methods:

  • Taking notes to learn lessons
  • Completing written assignments and projects
  • Having a planned educational experience

 Challenges & Strategies

 Lack of time - It may become difficult to identify students learning styles in a large classroom and it will become difficult to implement different learning styles as well. In such cased it is good if we,educators can implement preprepared learning materials with multiple learning styles.

 Limited Resources - Another significant problem is lack of  relevant material which are suitable for all learning materials where the educators should be creative and should be able to use simple resources like flash cards,sketches etc..

 Student Resistance - As students are adopted towards traditional learning methods, educators need to make the learners adopt the various methods gradually.

 Final thoughts

Customizing the lessons for the benefit of learners shows great positive impact on their future. Though it requires lot of effort and time ,a more engaged learning environment is worth it. Educators should believe that great teaching is not about how teacher works, it is what works for the learners.

 In the journey of learning let’s keep the learners where they belong, empowering them to reach greater heights which they felt impossible.
